Orlando Sentinel

Take one fabulous name, a menu with a thick Southern accent and a cool jazzy soundtrack, and you have the makings of an emerging star on the Central Florida restaurant scene. Sanford’s Two Blondes & a Shrimp offers a seasonal celebration of Southeastern fare with a Florida emphasis. The menu notes sources such as quail eggs from Mount Dora and chicken eggs from Lake Meadows Naturals in Ocoee. Fish and shellfish are mostly from Florida waters, and Florida produce is used in season. The grits are from Alabama, and the peaches are from Georgia — as they should be. Housed in a narrow slip of a building that was once home to Sanford’s first newspaper, Two Blondes and a Shrimp is offering an ambitious, moderately priced menu.

Lou’s Reviews: Two Blondes and a Shrimp (Sanford, FL)

Had another great Chowhound experience last night, and discovered a wonderful new restaurant in picturesque downtown Sanford, Two Blondes and a Shrimp. I found out about it from being on the mailing list for an Orlando-based jazz combo, the swanky, swingin’ Julie Lyon Quartet
( http://www.julielyonquartet.com/ ) — their latest newsletter showed them playing at this new restaurant, and they spoke very highly of the food based on past visits. Needless to say, we had to be there.

Totally adorable little Sanford joint with AMAZING service and high-quality (and affordable, and fresh, and made from scratch) food. I had the Southern Belle BLT which features fried green tomatoes and it was freaking awesome. My co-workers each got the She-Crap soup and were amazed at how much crab was in it, and it did look delish. The inside seating is a *little* tight, but they have an adorable outside section that I would love to hit on a lazy Saturday afternoon. If you’re in Sanford and looking for something awesome – you gotta try Two Blondes and a Shrimp.

I have frequented this fun and inviting restaurants many times. Each time I am intriged at trying a different menu option. Their food is fresh, seasonal and truely southern. The flavor combinations come together beautifully and they put their own unique spin on recipes that have been around forever. My favorites include the orange/crannbery turkey sandwich and the mango curry shrimp. The atmospher is very eclectic with an island feel, yet you’re still in the heart of the south. The outside seating area is very roomy and comes full circle with their own rooster…yes, that’s right, there’s a rooster that lives there and walks around freely. We took our dogs there for lunch and they had their own fun trying to figure out what that crazy looking feathered thing was roaming around. The wait staff is very friendly and they treat you like they have known you for years. They could also have a seat right at your table while taking your order and getting to know you. It’s that kind of place. Their desserts are delicous and I would recommend saving room in your tummy for some.

I went to Two Blondes and a Shrimp with my Wife for lunch one Friday afternoon and was thoroughly impressed. It was hot out, but with a nice breeze coming through the shady breezeway, it was great to sit outside. They had Dogfish Head 60min IPA, which is one of my favorites, so I ordered a beer and my wife had a glass of wine to complete the nice and comfortable atmosphere the restaurant provides. I had the shrimp and grits, which were great. The grits were perfectly cooked, and had some cheese added to them to make them creamy. The shimp was cooked with peppers, onions, and chorizo in a spicy (flavorful, not hot) ‘barbecue’ sauce that was delicious. My wife had the black bean patties, that were pan-seared and topped with a red pepper remoulade sauce. They were excellent, as was her macaroni and cheese side, which was basically lasagna sized noodles layered with a nice cheesy bechamel sauce. We had the from-scratch key lime pie for dessert, and it was very good. The only complaint I have is that they put the neon-green lime syrup on the plate. I hate that stuff, and I don’t think it has any place screwing with the already perfect taste of a good key lime pie. Regardless, the pie was tasty. The prices are very decent, considering the quality and portion of the food, and the great surroundings. It looks like they have live music sometimes, as they have a small stage setup under the breezeway, and I think this would be a great place to relax and catch some good live music. On a side note, there was a rooster running around the dining area. Not sure if that thing was feral or if it is part of the restaurant, but it was interesting to say the least! Either way, I would recommend anybody to try this restaurant. I was very impressed.
